The procedure involves collecting semen from a stallion and then transferring it into the mare's uterus via a catheter connected to a syringe. Semen can be collected directly or obtained from banks that store frozen specimens. The amount of semen needed will depend on the size of the mare, so accurate measurements are important.
An embryo transfer is a procedure where viable embryos are transferred from one mare to another. This allows a “recipient” mare to become pregnant without the need for breeding and can save valuable time in the breeding process. It also helps ensure that valuable genetic material of well-proven stallions is passed on, even if those stallion’s days at the stud have come to an end.
Using semen collection as part of your breeding program has numerous advantages, including increased genetic diversity and access to superior genetics from proven sires across the world. Because it is an artificial process, it also eliminates most of the risks associated with natural mating, such as stallion aggression or injury to mares during pregnancy. Additionally, semen collection allows breeders to use multiple sires without managing multiple matings within a herd.
